Instructions

Filling

  1. Step 1: Put all the tuna filling ingredients in a bowl. Mix well with a wooden spoon, breaking up the tuna until the filling is fairly smooth. Keep mixing so the pickles and celery soften and release some of their juices into the filling.

Sandwiches

  1. Step 2: Divide the tuna filling among 4 sandwiches, adjusting the amount as needed for the size of your bread. Butter the bread and add 2 pieces of lettuce per sandwich, followed by the tuna filling. Top with the remaining bread, then cut and serve.

Notes

For a different flavor, use parsley or basil instead of dill, or substitute finely minced shallots or 1/4 cup finely minced red onion for the green onion. Canned tuna in water or canned salmon also works. Pickled cucumbers are another option, though they are typically softer.

Store leftover filling in an airtight container for up to 3 days; mix it well if it becomes watery. Assembled sandwiches are best eaten fresh. To help protect the bread if keeping a sandwich longer, butter the bread and place lettuce on each slice.
