Instructions
Step 1: Mix the sauce ingredients together in a bowl.
Step 2: Heat the oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add the garlic and onion and cook for 1 minute, or until the onion starts to brown.
Step 3: Add the beef and cook, breaking it up as you go.
Step 4: Once all the beef has changed from red to brown, add the sauce. Cook for a further 2 minutes, or until the sauce has evaporated and the beef is cooked. If you prefer the beef more well done, add a splash of water and keep cooking.

Step 5: Stir through the scallions. Serve over rice, garnished with more scallions and sesame seeds, if desired. Cauliflower rice is another serving option.
Notes
Substitutions and storage
For the Chinese cooking wine, use mirin, dry sherry, or cooking sake. If you can’t consume alcohol, use 1/4 cup chicken stock; the sauce will take around 3 minutes to evaporate. Dark soy sauce can be replaced with all-purpose soy sauce, though the beef will not be as dark brown.
Refrigerate leftovers for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

About this recipe
A quick skillet of savory ground beef, flavored with a simple sauce of hoisin, oyster sauce, soy, and sesame oil. Serve it over rice and finish with scallions and sesame seeds.

The beef mixture is juicy rather than heavily sauced, making it easy to serve over rice. Cauliflower rice is also suggested as an alternative.
