Notes
Variations
Gelato is traditional, but ice cream works too. Vanilla is the classic choice; other flavours are welcome. For optional toppings, try chocolate shavings, whipped cream, melted chocolate, or roughly chopped pistachios or hazelnuts. Biscotti makes a good side for dunking.
Choosing a glass
A glass that is taller than it is wide, but not too tall, is easier to eat from than a shallow cocktail glass.

About this recipe
Affogato brings together hot espresso and cold vanilla gelato or ice cream in a quick Italian coffee dessert. Add Frangelico, amaretto, or another liqueur for an after-dinner drink twist.

Use hot, strong espresso and serve the affogato as soon as it is poured, while the ice cream is still cold and the coffee is hot.
