Instructions

Tart

  1. Step 1: ABBREVIATED: Sprinkle paper with 3t sugar, put puff on, fold in 1cm / 0.4" edge. Top with apple, brush butter, sprinkle 2t sugar. Bake on preheated tray at 210°C/375°F (190°C fan) for 30 minutes.

  2. Step 2: Put a baking tray in the oven, then turn it on and preheat to 210°C/375°F (190°C fan-forced).

A baking tray is placed in the oven; apple preparation is also shown.
  3. Step 3: Place a sheet of baking paper on the counter. Sprinkle 3 teaspoons of sugar on it, roughly in the shape of the puff pastry sheet.

Sugar is sprinkled on the counter and the edge of puff pastry is folded.
  4. Step 4: Place the puff pastry on top of the sugar. Fold the edges inwards to create a 1cm / 0.4-inch edge.

  5. Step 5: Arrange the apple slices in 3 rows, overlapping them slightly.

Apple slices are arranged on pastry, brushed, and the tart is placed in the oven.
  6. Step 6: Brush the apple slices and edges with melted butter, then sprinkle the remaining sugar over the apples and edge.

  7. Step 7: Transfer the tart on the paper to the hot baking tray, keeping it on the paper. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the edges are golden.

  8. Step 8: Cut into 6 pieces, dust with icing sugar and serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

A baked apple tart is shown whole and served with ice cream.

Notes

Use any eating apple you like. Granny Smith gives a tarter result, Fuji is sweeter, and Pink Lady is sweet-tart.

For a cinnamon variation, mix 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon with 2 teaspoons of the sugar and sprinkle the mixture over the apples.

Leftovers keep for 3 days, though the pastry softens. Warm the tart in the oven for a few minutes to revive it.
